Netherlands Visa for France Citizens 2026

Visa Free

French citizens can enter the Netherlands with just a valid national ID card or passport — no visa needed — under EU freedom of movement, with no limit on length of stay.

Guide last updated October 27, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • A valid French national identity card or passport — either is sufficient, no visa or travel authorization of any kind
  • No minimum passport validity period is required beyond the document's own expiry date
  • No proof of funds, accommodation or return ticket is required for entry as an EU citizen
  • No biometrics or photos are collected at the border
  • Travel health insurance is not required for the visit itself, though a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is recommended for healthcare access
  • Registration with the local municipality (BRP/RNI) is only required if you settle for more than 4 months, not for short visits

Visa types

  • No visa category applies — this is free movement under EU/EEA citizenship rights
  • There is no tourist, business or student visa requirement for French nationals; students and workers register locally once in the Netherlands rather than obtaining a visa beforehand

Entry conditions

  • IMPORTANT: This is a freedom-of-movement route — as an EU citizen, a valid French national ID card or passport is sufficient; no visa is needed. This falls under the EU/EEA freedom of movement arrangement
  • You may enter and remain in the Netherlands indefinitely under this right, without needing to justify the purpose of your stay at the border
  • If staying beyond 4 months to live, work or study, registration with the local gemeente (municipality) and a BSN (citizen service number) is required — this is an administrative registration, not a visa
  • No restrictions on working, studying or residing short- or long-term as an EU national

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee, since no visa is required
  • No processing time — entry is immediate with ID or passport check at the border
  • No express or priority service needed
  • Any cost only arises if registering locally for a long stay (municipal registration is generally free or a nominal administrative fee)

Tips for France travelers

  • Carry your national ID card or passport — both are equally valid, so choose whichever is more convenient
  • If driving, a French driving licence is valid in the Netherlands without conversion
  • If you plan to work or study long-term, register with the local gemeente promptly after arrival to obtain your BSN, needed for banking, healthcare and payroll
  • No extension or renewal process applies since there is no visa to begin with
  • Keep in mind that while entry itself has no limit, non-EU family members travelling with you may need their own visa or residence documents
