Guide last updated September 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • Completed arrival visa form (given on arrival, or filled online for the e-Visa alternative)
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) may be requested
  • 1 passport-size photo for the physical visa on arrival (not needed for the e-Visa)
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo taken at immigration on arrival
  • Travel health insurance: strongly recommended, especially given limited medical facilities outside Antananarivo

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: issued at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo) and other international entry points, single entry, tiered by stay length - up to 30 days approx EUR 20-25, 31-60 days approx EUR 30-35, 61-90 days approx EUR 40.
  • e-Visa: same fee tiers as above, applied for online in advance at evisamada.gov.mg, processed within a few business days and collected/validated on arrival.
  • Business visa: requires an invitation letter from a Malagasy company, arranged in advance, fee similar to the tourist tiers plus documentation requirements.

Visa on arrival

  • Land at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo) or another designated international entry point
  • Fill in the arrival/visa form (or present your pre-approved e-Visa confirmation)
  • Submit passport and photo (if applying on arrival) at the visa counter before immigration
  • Pay the tiered fee in EUR or USD cash
  • Wait for passport stamping, typically 15-30 minutes depending on queue and flight volume
  • Queue tip: arrivals from Europe often land together in the evening, so lines can be long - having exact cash ready speeds things up

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approx EUR 20 (up to 30 days), EUR 30-35 (31-60 days), EUR 40 (61-90 days)
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee - handled directly by Malagasy immigration or the e-Visa portal
  • Total estimated cost: EUR 20-40 depending on stay length
  • Standard processing: on arrival, 15-30 minutes; e-Visa, typically 2-5 business days online
  • No formal express option; the e-Visa itself functions as a pre-clearance to speed up arrival

Tips for France travelers

  • Applying for the e-Visa in advance is recommended to shorten the on-arrival queue, especially for evening flights
  • Common rejection/delay reasons: passport validity under 6 months, missing photo for on-arrival applications, incomplete onward travel details
  • No VFS/BLS office is used; apply directly online or on arrival
  • Check current French Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisories, particularly for regions outside the capital
  • Extensions beyond the initial visa period can be requested at the immigration office in Antananarivo before expiry
