Guide last updated September 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, with at least 1 blank page.
  • Completed arrival/visa application form (given on arrival or filled online for the e-Visa)
  • 1 passport-size photo (4x6cm, white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) may be requested
  • Sufficient funds for the stay (cash or card, rarely checked in practice)
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo taken at the border on arrival, not required for the online e-Visa application itself
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory but strongly recommended given limited public healthcare facilities

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: issued at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang Airport, Pakse Airport and major land border crossings (e.g. Friendship Bridge). Single entry, valid 30 days, fee USD 30-42 depending on nationality (French passport holders typically pay USD 30-35 plus a small overtime/stamp fee outside office hours).
  • e-Visa: applied online in advance at laoevisa.gov.la, single entry, 30 days validity, must be used within 60 days of issue, fee approx USD 30-40 plus a USD 5-7 service fee.
  • Business visa: requires an invitation/sponsorship letter from a Lao company, arranged through a local sponsor or travel agent before arrival, single or multiple entry, fee and duration vary by sponsor request.

Visa on arrival

  • Land at Vientiane, Luang Prabang or Pakse airport, or cross at an eligible land border (e.g. Friendship Bridge from Thailand)
  • Fill in the arrival card and visa application form (available at the counter)
  • Submit passport, 1 photo, and the completed form at the Visa on Arrival counter before immigration
  • Pay the fee in USD cash (exact change recommended; some counters also accept local kip)
  • Wait for passport processing, usually 10-20 minutes depending on queue
  • Queue tip: arrive early on morning flights to avoid long lines behind tour groups; land border crossings can be slower and less predictable

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival fee: USD 30-42 (cash only, in USD)
  • e-Visa fee: approx USD 30-40 visa fee + USD 5-7 service fee, payable online by card
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee for either route
  • Total estimated cost: USD 35-47
  • Standard processing: on arrival, same day (10-20 minutes); e-Visa, 3 business days
  • No official express option for visa on arrival; e-Visa has no expedited tier either

Tips for France travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa a few days before travel to skip the on-arrival queue, especially useful for busy flight arrival times
  • Bring exact USD cash for visa on arrival; ATMs are not usually available before immigration
  • Common rejection reasons: passport with less than 6 months validity, missing photo, incomplete arrival form
  • No VFS/BLS office involved; apply directly online or on arrival
  • Extensions of up to 30 additional days are possible at the Immigration Department in Vientiane for a daily overstay-style fee if arranged in advance
