Bhutan Visa for France Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

French citizens need a visa for Bhutan, arranged online in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or the Department of Immigration's online system, and must pay the mandatory Sustainable Development Fee.

Guide last updated September 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from date of entry
  • Confirmed travel arrangements booked through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator (independent backpacking is not permitted for most visitors)
  • Digital passport photo uploaded during the online visa application
  • Full pre-payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and trip costs before the visa is issued
  • Travel health/medical insurance strongly recommended
  • No in-person biometrics; visa clearance is issued electronically before arrival

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: arranged online, single entry, validity matched to your booked itinerary, typically up to 90 days maximum stay
  • Business visa: requires an invitation from a Bhutanese company, arranged via the Department of Immigration online portal
  • Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals have separate permit-free or simplified arrangements; these do not apply to French citizens

How to apply online

  • Your Bhutanese tour operator (or a Bhutanese partner) submits your visa application via the online system at the Department of Immigration (mfa.gov.bt / online visa portal)
  • Provide passport scan and photo; the operator handles most of the paperwork
  • Visa clearance letter is issued electronically once the SDF and trip costs are paid, usually within a few working days
  • Present the printed visa clearance and passport on arrival at Paro Airport or a land border; the physical visa stamp is affixed on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 40, paid alongside the SDF
  • Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night (reduced rates may apply for extended stays; children pay less)
  • Processing time: typically 3-5 working days once documents and payment are submitted
  • No same-day or express visa option; plan at least 2 weeks ahead

Tips for France travelers

  • Book through a reputable, licensed Bhutanese tour operator well in advance, ideally 4-6 weeks before travel
  • Confirm all SDF and trip payments are made early, as the visa clearance is only issued after full payment
  • Carry a printed copy of your visa clearance letter for airline check-in in Paris, Delhi, Bangkok or Kathmandu (common connecting hubs)
  • Extensions are handled by your tour operator through the Department of Immigration in Thimphu
