Visa Free

French citizens can enter Albania visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period using a valid passport or national ID card.

Guide last updated September 22, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid passport or French national ID card (carte nationale d'identite), valid for the duration of stay
  • No visa application form needed for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter) recommended but rarely checked
  • Return or onward ticket may be requested by border officials
  • Travel health insurance recommended, not mandatory
  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry

Visa types

  • Visa-free tourist/business entry: up to 90 days within any 180-day period, multiple entry, no fee
  • Longer stays (student, work, residence) require a Type D national visa applied for at the Albanian Embassy in Paris before travel, or a residence permit after arrival for stays over 90 days

Entry conditions

  • French citizens may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa
  • Employment during the visa-free period is not permitted without separate work authorization
  • Show passport/ID and, if asked, proof of funds (roughly EUR 30-50/day) and onward travel
  • To stay beyond 90 days, apply for a residence permit with the Albanian border police before the 90 days expire

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-free entry up to 90 days
  • Type D national visa (long-stay): approx EUR 65-90 depending on purpose, processed in 10-15 working days at the Albanian Embassy in Paris
  • No service/VFS fee - applications go directly through the embassy
  • No express option for national visas

Tips for France travelers

  • Bring your national ID card as an alternative to a passport, since Albania accepts both
  • If you plan to work or study, start the Type D visa process at least 4-6 weeks before departure
  • Days spent in Schengen countries do not count against Albania's separate 90/180 allowance, so track each count individually
  • Albania is not in Schengen, so entry/exit stamps are still applied even with a French passport
