Afghanistan Visa for France Citizens 2026

Visa Required

French citizens need an Afghan visa before travel, though most governments currently advise against all travel to Afghanistan given the security and political situation.

Guide last updated October 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the visa validity, with at least two blank pages
  • One or two passport-size photos with a white background
  • A completed visa application, submitted via the e-visa portal or a consular section
  • A letter explaining the purpose of travel
  • Proof of accommodation or invitation in Afghanistan
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Biometrics are not routinely collected for this visa
  • Travel health and evacuation insurance strongly advised given the absence of normal consular protection

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: single entry, typically 30 days validity, rarely issued at present
  • Business visa: single or multiple entry, up to 90 days, requires a local sponsor letter
  • Journalist visa: requires accreditation from the Government Media and Information Center
  • Diplomatic/Official visa: for government travel
  • Fees and exact validity vary by category and are set by the issuing mission

How to apply

  • France has no Afghan embassy currently providing normal consular services, so applications are generally submitted online via evisa.mfa.gov.af or through the nearest operating Afghan mission
  • Upload passport scans, photos, and a purpose-of-travel letter, then wait for approval before travel, as visa-on-arrival is not offered
  • Some categories require an in-person interview at a regional mission once the online application is approved

Fees & processing time

  • E-visa fees typically range from USD 20-80 depending on visa type and validity, payable online by card
  • Standard processing is quoted at 3-7 working days but can take significantly longer, or be suspended, depending on the operating status of consular services
  • No routine express or priority service is currently available

Tips for France travelers

  • Check the France Diplomatie travel advisory before any application, as it currently recommends against all travel to Afghanistan
  • Register your trip with Ariane, the French government's travel registration service, if travel proceeds regardless
  • Confirm which Afghan mission is actively processing visas before applying, since consular operations can be intermittent
  • Arrange independent evacuation insurance, as French consular assistance inside Afghanistan is extremely limited
