Guide last updated October 18, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation in Sri Lanka
  • Proof of sufficient funds (approx USD 15 per day of stay)
  • Digital passport photo for the online ETA, or a physical photo for airport processing
  • No biometrics required for the ETA; fingerprints may be captured at immigration on arrival
  • Travel health insurance recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • Tourist ETA/visa on arrival - single entry, 30 days, extendable, fee approx USD 50-55
  • Business ETA/visa on arrival - single entry, 30 days, fee approx USD 50-55, requires business letter
  • Transit visa - up to 2 days, free of charge for transiting passengers

Visa on arrival

  • Apply online in advance through eta.gov.lk (recommended) or request a visa directly at the visa-on-arrival counter at Bandaranaike International Airport
  • At the airport: complete a short form, present passport, return ticket and accommodation proof, and pay the fee in USD or by card
  • Online ETA applications are typically approved within minutes to 24 hours and sent by email
  • Queues at the arrival visa counter can be long during peak season (Dec-Mar); applying online in advance avoids the wait
  • No embassy visit or appointment is required for either route

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist ETA/visa fee: approx USD 50-55 (payable online by card, or in cash/card on arrival)
  • No separate service fee for direct online ETA applications
  • Standard processing: instant to 24 hours online; immediate at the airport counter
  • No express option needed given the fast turnaround

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply for the ETA online a few days before travel to avoid airport queues
  • Common rejection reason: mismatched passport details entered on the online form
  • Carry a printed copy of the ETA approval and your return ticket for airline check-in
  • Extensions up to a total of 90 days can be obtained from the Department of Immigration in Colombo
  • Use only the official eta.gov.lk domain, as third-party sites charge inflated service fees
