What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry, with at least 1 blank page
  • Visa-on-arrival application form, completed on arrival or in advance via the online arrival form at nepalimmigration.gov.np
  • One recent passport-style photo (also scanned for the online form)
  • Visa fee payable in cash (USD, EUR, or major convertible currencies) - Egyptian pounds are not accepted
  • Proof of accommodation and onward travel plans may be requested
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, especially for trekking permits
  • No biometrics required beyond a photo taken at the immigration counter

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and major land border posts with India

  • Use the self-service kiosks at the airport to scan your passport and photo, reducing counter wait time
  • Pay the visa fee in cash at the bank counter inside the arrivals hall, then collect the visa sticker from the immigration desk
  • Total process typically takes 20-45 minutes depending on how busy the airport is

  • Pre-fill the online arrival form before your flight to cut down queue time significantly at Kathmandu airport
  • Carry exact USD cash, since currency exchange counters near the visa desk can have long queues
  • Common issues: passports with less than 6 months validity are refused, and old or unclear passport photos are sometimes rejected
  • If trekking in restricted areas (e.g. Upper Mustang, Manaslu), a separate special permit is required in addition to the visa
