Egyptian citizens need a Schengen visa to visit Hungary, applied for through the Hungarian consulate or its visa application partner in Cairo.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (available via konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu)
  • One recent biometric passport photo (35x45mm, white background)
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) required in person for first-time Schengen applicants or those without fingerprints on file from the last 59 months
  • Proof of funds (bank statements, last 3-6 months, roughly EUR 50-100/day of stay)
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the Schengen area for the full trip
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation and hotel booking or invitation letter

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C short-stay visa (tourist/business/family visit): single, double or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, fee EUR 80
  • National Type D long-stay visa for work, study or family reunification, applied for separately with additional documentation

How to apply

  • Book an appointment through the Hungarian consulate's visa partner (commonly VFS Global in Cairo) and complete the online application form
  • Attend the appointment with all original documents, pay the fee, and give biometrics
  • Interviews are not standard but may be requested in specific cases
  • Track the application status online; the passport is returned once a decision is made

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 80 for adults; reduced or waived for children under certain ages
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately EUR 25-30 on top of the visa fee
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days, extendable up to 30-45 days in complex cases
  • No official express service for Schengen visas; apply early in peak season (summer, December)

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel; Schengen rules allow applications up to 6 months in advance
  • Apply to Hungary specifically if it is your main destination or where you'll spend the most nights, per the Schengen 'main destination' rule
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient funds, unclear travel purpose, weak ties to Egypt, or incomplete insurance documents
