Guide last updated October 17, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form.
  • Travel health insurance covering at least €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation, valid across the Schengen area.
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host invitation letter).
  • Confirmed round-trip flight reservation.
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months plus an employer letter or business registration documents if self-employed.
  • One recent passport photo, 35mm x 45mm, light background.
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are mandatory and collected in person at the embassy or consulate.

Visa types

  • Schengen Short-Stay Visa (Type C): tourism, business, or family visits, single or multiple entry, up to 90 days in any 180-day period, fee €80.
  • National Long-Stay Visa (Type D): for study, work, or family reunification exceeding 90 days.
  • Seafarer/Transit Visa: special category for maritime workers transiting through Greek ports, rarely used by tourists.

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with the Greek Embassy in Cairo or the Consulate in Alexandria.
  • Complete the Schengen application form and gather supporting documents, including insurance, financial proof, and accommodation/booking details.
  • Attend in person to submit documents, pay the fee, and provide biometrics.
  • Pay the €80 visa fee at the embassy/consulate.
  • Track your application status as instructed; standard decision time is about 15 calendar days, extending to 30-45 days in peak season (especially before summer).
  • Collect your passport once the decision is made.

Fees & processing time

  • Schengen visa fee: €80 for adults, €40 for children 6-12, free under 6.
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee if applying directly at the embassy/consulate; fees may differ slightly if a visa centre is used.
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days for a complete application.
  • During the summer peak season, processing can extend significantly, so apply as early as possible (up to 6 months ahead for planned trips).

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply well ahead of summer travel dates, as Greece is a high-demand Schengen destination for Egyptian travelers and appointment slots fill quickly.
  • Common rejection reasons: weak financial documentation, inconsistent trip details, and insufficient proof of ties to Egypt.
  • If Greece is not your main Schengen destination, apply instead at the embassy of the country where you will spend the most nights.
  • Keep copies of all submitted documents and your appointment confirmation until the visa is issued.
  • Consider applying through the Alexandria consulate if more convenient, as it processes the same Schengen visa category as Cairo.
