What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay
  • A digital passport photo and scanned passport bio page for the online application
  • Confirmed flight itinerary into Paro or arrival details for land entry
  • Full trip itinerary, since Bhutan tourism is organized around a planned route submitted with the visa application
  • Proof of payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
  • Travel insurance is recommended

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: issued online for leisure travel, tied to a submitted itinerary, typically for the planned trip duration
  • Business visa: for short business trips, requires a local sponsoring entity
  • Note: regional visa-free/visa-on-arrival access (applicable to India, Bangladesh and the Maldives) does not extend to Egyptian citizens, who must obtain the online visa in advance

How to apply online

  • Apply through the Department of Immigration's online visa system, typically via a licensed Bhutanese tour operator who handles the submission
  • Provide passport details, photo, itinerary and payment for the visa fee and the Sustainable Development Fee
  • Receive the visa approval letter by email before travel
  • The actual visa is stamped in the passport on arrival in Bhutan, based on the pre-approved online visa
  • Processing is usually completed within a few business days once documents are in order

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 40, payable with the application
  • Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night for most international tourists (reduced rates apply for children and some other categories)
  • Processing time: typically 3-5 business days once the operator submits a complete application
  • No separate express fee, but earlier application avoids itinerary conflicts

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Book through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator early, since the visa cannot be obtained independently without a confirmed itinerary
  • Budget for the SDF as a major daily cost on top of hotel and tour prices
  • Carry the printed visa approval letter, as it is required for boarding the flight to Bhutan and for passport stamping on arrival
  • Build some flexibility into the itinerary, since Bhutan's mountain roads and weather can affect travel plans
  • Relay any itinerary change after visa approval through the tour operator promptly
