Guide last updated October 17, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date, with 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (signed)
  • 2 recent passport photos, 35x45mm, white background
  • Travel/health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 for the whole Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months and an employment letter or business registration
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) must be given in person at the VFS Global Austria Visa Application Centre in Cairo

Visa types

  • Schengen Type C (short-stay): tourism, business or family visits, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, single or multiple entry
  • Schengen Type D (national visa): for stays over 90 days, e.g. study at an Austrian university or long-term work
  • Red-White-Red Card: Austria's points-based work and settlement permit for skilled workers, applied for after a job offer

How to apply

  • Book an appointment with the VFS Global Austria Visa Application Centre (Cairo or Alexandria)
  • Complete the online application form and print it
  • Submit documents and biometrics in person at the VFS centre
  • Pay the visa fee plus the VFS service fee at submission
  • Track the application online; collect the passport once the decision is made, or opt for courier return

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: EUR 90 for adults, EUR 35 for children aged 6-11, free under 6
  • VFS service fee: approximately EUR 25-30 on top of the consular fee
  • Standard processing time: around 15 calendar days
  • In some cases processing can extend up to 30-45 days, especially during peak season
  • No formal express service for Austria; apply well ahead of travel dates

Tips for Egypt travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel, since Schengen consulates can take up to 45 days during peak summer and holiday periods
  • Common rejection reasons for Egyptian applicants include insufficient bank balance, weak travel history, or unclear purpose of travel
  • Submit through VFS Global rather than contacting the embassy directly, as Austria outsources visa collection
  • Keep a 3-6 month bank statement with a steady balance, not a one-time large deposit
  • If you need to extend a stay inside Austria, apply at the local immigration office (MA 35 in Vienna) before the visa expires
