Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry.
  • Completed arrival/disembarkation card (provided on the flight).
  • Proof of onward or return travel (essential, as Tuvalu has very limited flight connections - typically only Fiji Airways from Suva).
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
  • No photo or advance form is required for the free visitor permit.
  • Travel health insurance, including medical evacuation coverage, is strongly recommended given Tuvalu's extremely limited medical facilities.

Visa types

  • Visitor Permit on Arrival (used by nearly all visitors): up to 30 days, single entry, no fee.
  • Extension of Stay: for trips beyond 30 days, apply at the Office of the Principal Immigration Officer in Funafuti, subject to case-by-case approval.
  • Work/Business Permits: require a separate application with a local sponsor and are not issued on arrival.

Visa on arrival

  • Granted automatically at Funafuti International Airport when you present your passport and arrival card - Tuvalu has only one international airport.
  • No fee is charged for the initial 30-day permit.
  • Processing is immediate given the small scale of arrivals (often just one or two flights per week).
  • Because flights are infrequent, confirm your return flight booking carefully before arrival, as immigration checks this closely.

Fees & processing time

  • Initial 30-day visitor permit: free.
  • Extension at the Immigration Office in Funafuti: case-by-case, no fixed published fee; processing can take a few business days given the small administrative office.
  • No online or pre-arrival application exists; everything is handled in person at the airport.

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Book your Fiji Airways flight to Funafuti well in advance, as it typically operates only a few times per week and seats sell out, especially around Tuvaluan holidays.
  • Bring more cash than you think you'll need - ATMs and card payment options are extremely limited in Tuvalu.
  • Confirm your return flight date matches your visitor permit period, since immigration in Tuvalu pays close attention to onward travel given the limited flight schedule.
  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is essential, as serious medical care requires transfer to Fiji.
  • Respect local customs and dress modestly, particularly when visiting outer islands by boat.
