Tonga Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa on Arrival

Canadian citizens receive a free Visitor Visa on arrival in Tonga for stays of up to 31 days, granted at Fua'amotu International Airport with no advance application needed.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry.
  • Completed arrival/disembarkation card (provided on the flight or at the airport).
  • Proof of onward or return travel.
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
  • No photo or advance form is required for the free visitor permit.
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, since Tonga's medical facilities are limited, especially on outer islands.

Visa types

  • Visitor Permit on Arrival (used by nearly all Canadian tourists): up to 31 days, single entry, no fee.
  • Extended Visitor Permit: for stays beyond 31 days, apply at the Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa, fee TOP 87.50 (about CAD 50) per 1-month extension, up to a maximum stay of 6 months.
  • Business/Work Permits require a separate application with an employer sponsor and are not issued on arrival.

Visa on arrival

  • Granted automatically at Fua'amotu International Airport (Tongatapu) or Vava'u's Lupepau'u Airport when you present your passport and arrival card.
  • No fee is charged for the initial 31-day permit.
  • Processing is immediate - you receive an entry stamp valid for 31 days at the immigration counter.
  • If you plan to island-hop (e.g., to Vava'u or Ha'apai), your 31-day permit covers travel within Tonga without needing a new visa at each stop.

Fees & processing time

  • Initial 31-day visitor permit: free.
  • Extension at the Immigration Division in Nuku'alofa: approximately TOP 87.50 (about CAD 50) per additional month, processed same-day or within 1-2 business days.
  • No online or pre-arrival application exists; everything is handled in person, either at the airport or the immigration office for extensions.

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Since there's no online application, simply ensure your passport has 6 months' validity and a confirmed return/onward ticket before you fly.
  • If your trip may run past 31 days, plan a visit to the Nuku'alofa immigration office early rather than waiting until your permit is about to expire.
  • Flights to Tonga are infrequent (often only a few per week from Fiji, New Zealand, or Australia), so build buffer time into your itinerary in case you need to extend locally.
  • Carry Tongan pa'anga (TOP) or NZD cash, as card payment options are limited outside the main island.
  • Check ferry and inter-island flight schedules in advance if visiting outer islands, as these can be infrequent.
