Tanzania Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa on Arrival

Canadian citizens need a single-entry Tourist Visa on Arrival (or the equivalent eVisa) for Tanzania, costing USD 50, best applied for online in advance via eservices.immigration.go.tz.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Tanzania, with at least one blank page.
  • Completed online application (or paper form if applying at the port of entry).
  • Proof of accommodation and a return/onward ticket.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from, or having transited through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • Passport-style photo (2x2 inches, white background) for the online application.
  • No biometrics required beyond a photo taken at the immigration counter on arrival.
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, particularly for safari and Kilimanjaro trips.

Visa types

  • Single-entry Tourist Visa: 90 days validity, single entry, fee USD 50.
  • Multi-entry Tourist Visa (useful if combining Tanzania with a side trip to Kenya or Zanzibar re-entry): 12 months validity, fee USD 100.
  • Transit Visa: up to 7 days, fee USD 30, for travelers passing through to a third country.
  • Business Visa: single entry, fee USD 250, requires an invitation letter from the host company.

Visa on arrival

  • Apply online in advance at eservices.immigration.go.tz (recommended) or complete the paper form at major ports of entry (Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or land borders).
  • Pay the USD 50 fee in cash (USD only, clean bills) or by card where available at major airports.
  • Processing at the airport counter typically takes 15-30 minutes if you pre-applied online; longer if applying fresh on arrival during peak season.
  • Keep your approval printout or reference number if you applied online, as officers may ask to see it.

Fees & processing time

  • Single-entry tourist visa: USD 50, no separate service fee when paid directly to immigration.
  • Multi-entry tourist visa: USD 100.
  • Online eVisa processing: typically 5-10 business days for approval - apply at least 2 weeks before travel.
  • On-arrival processing (if not pre-applied): 15-60 minutes depending on airport queues.
  • No express/priority option is offered; online pre-approval is the fastest reliable route.

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Apply for the eVisa online at least 2 weeks before departure to avoid arrival queues, especially at Kilimanjaro International Airport during peak safari season (June-September).
  • Bring exact or close-to-exact USD cash as backup even if you plan to pay online, in case of system issues at the airport.
  • A common rejection/delay reason is an unclear or non-passport-style photo on the online application - use a proper white-background photo.
  • If you're also visiting Kenya, Rwanda, or Uganda, ask about the East Africa Tourist Visa, which is a separate multi-country product, not the same as Tanzania's own multi-entry visa.
  • Double check your yellow fever vaccination requirement if transiting through Kenya or other endemic-risk countries beforehand.
