Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry.
  • No visa application or form required for stays up to 30 days.
  • Proof of onward/return travel may be requested at the border.
  • Sufficient funds for your stay.
  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry.
  • Travel health insurance is strongly recommended, since medical facilities outside Dushanbe are limited.

Visa types

  • Visa-free entry (used by most Canadian short-term visitors): up to 30 days, single entry, no fee.
  • E-Visa (if you need longer than 30 days or plan to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region/GBAO): apply online at evisa.tj, validity up to 45 days, single entry, fee about USD 50-75, plus a separate GBAO permit if traveling to the Pamir region.

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay in Tajikistan up to 30 days without a visa for tourism or business.
  • Work is not permitted on visa-free entry.
  • If you plan to travel to the GBAO/Pamir Highway region, you need a GBAO permit even on a visa-free stay - apply for this alongside or instead of the e-visa at evisa.tj.
  • Registration with local authorities may be required if staying beyond a few days; hotels typically handle this automatically.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-free entry: no fee, no processing time.
  • E-Visa (only if you need more than 30 days or a GBAO permit): about USD 50 standard visa fee plus USD 20 for the GBAO permit, processing 3 business days online.
  • No embassy visit or courier service needed since everything is handled through evisa.tj.

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Double-check whether your itinerary includes the GBAO/Pamir region - this is the most common reason Canadian travelers end up needing paperwork despite the visa-free allowance.
  • Carry printed proof of your accommodation bookings, since hotels and guesthouses ask for this at check-in for registration purposes.
  • ATMs are scarce outside Dushanbe, so carry US dollars in cash as backup.
  • Check Global Affairs Canada advisories for the Tajik-Afghan border region before finalizing your itinerary.
