South Africa Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can visit South Africa visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days per visit.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your intended stay, following South Africa's relaxed passport-validity rule that no longer requires a fixed 30-day or 6-month buffer for most visitors
  • Proof of return or onward travel
  • Proof of sufficient funds, roughly ZAR 1,500-3,000 per day suggested
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate only if arriving from a country at risk of yellow fever transmission
  • No visa, ETA, or advance online form required for tourism or business up to 90 days

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt short stay: tourism or business up to 90 days, no application needed
  • Study visa, work visa, or Critical Skills work visa: required for longer academic or employment stays, applied for through VFS Global South Africa before travel
  • Long-term visitor visa: for retirees or extended stays beyond 90 days, applied for in advance

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days per visit for tourism or business, no work permitted
  • Immigration officers may ask for proof of return travel and available funds on arrival
  • Extensions are possible before the 90 days expire, applied for through VFS Global or the Department of Home Affairs
  • Direct transit through OR Tambo International Airport without leaving the airport does not require an entry visa

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-exempt entry itself
  • Extension applications cost approximately ZAR 1,520 (about USD 85) and are processed within a few weeks through VFS Global or Home Affairs
  • Overstaying results in fines and possible future entry bans, so extensions should be filed before the 90 days run out

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Carry proof of accommodation and a return ticket even though no visa is required, since officers commonly ask
  • Purchase travel medical insurance, as private healthcare costs can be high for visitors
  • Check current safety and crime advisories for the areas you plan to visit
  • Register connecting flights carefully if transiting through Johannesburg to avoid unnecessary visa questions
