  • Proof of return or onward travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host invitation)
  • Proof of sufficient funds, roughly EUR 70 per day or bank/credit card statement
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended
  • No advance photo or biometrics needed for short visits; EES biometric registration is being phased in at Schengen external borders

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt short stay: tourism, business, or family visits up to 90 days, no application needed
  • National long-stay visa (type D): required for stays beyond 90 days, study, or work, issued by the Embassy of Slovenia in Ottawa
  • Temporary residence permit: required for work or long-term study, applied for at the local administrative unit (upravna enota) after arrival

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area
  • No work permitted on the visa-exempt entry
  • Border officers may check your return ticket, accommodation, and funds
  • ETIAS travel authorization is planned for future introduction for visa-exempt travelers; check its current status before booking
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are exceptional and handled by the local police administrative unit

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-exempt short stay
  • ETIAS, once required, is expected to cost approximately EUR 7
  • National long-stay visa fee is approximately EUR 99, processed in about 15-30 calendar days at the embassy
  • No service fee for entering visa-free

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Apply for a long-stay visa at least a month ahead if staying past 90 days
  • Keep proof of funds and hotel bookings handy even without a visa requirement
  • Track your cumulative Schengen days if you have recently visited other member countries
  • Register with Canada's ROCA service before your trip
  • Contact the Slovenian Embassy in Ottawa directly for work or study visa procedures, as processing can take longer than for tourist stays
