Slovakia Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can visit Slovakia visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period as part of the Schengen Area.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of return or onward travel (flight itinerary)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds, roughly EUR 50-70 per day or a bank/credit card statement
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended and can be requested at the border
  • No passport photo or advance biometrics needed for short stays; the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is being phased in and will capture fingerprints and a photo at first entry

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt short stay: tourism, business, or family visits up to 90 days, no application needed
  • National long-stay visa (type D): required for stays over 90 days, study, or work, issued by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Ottawa, typical validity matches the purpose of stay (e.g. one academic year for students)
  • Temporary residence permit: needed for employment or long-term study, applied for after entry with the Slovak Foreign Police

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, counted across the entire Schengen Area, not just Slovakia
  • No work is permitted on the visa-exempt entry
  • Border officers may ask to see your return ticket, accommodation proof, and funds
  • The planned EU ETIAS travel authorization will eventually add a short online pre-registration step for visa-exempt travelers; check the official ETIAS site for its current rollout status before booking
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are rarely granted except for documented emergencies, via the Foreign Police (cudzinecka policia)

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-exempt short stay
  • ETIAS, once required, is expected to cost approximately EUR 7 (free for travelers under 18 or over 70), with near-instant to 96-hour processing
  • National long-stay visa fee is approximately EUR 99, with standard processing of 15-30 calendar days at the embassy or via VFS Global
  • No service fee for the visa-exempt entry itself

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Apply for a long-stay visa at least 4-6 weeks ahead if you plan to stay past 90 days
  • Carry printed proof of funds and accommodation even though no visa is required, since border officers can still ask
  • Track your Schengen day count if you have visited other Schengen countries recently, since the 90/180 limit is shared
  • Register your trip with Canada's Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) service
  • For work or study visas, apply through the Slovak Embassy in Ottawa well before your intended start date
