  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) recommended for immigration
  • Return or onward ticket

  • No visa photo required for the free 30-day entry permit
  • No biometrics required beyond standard photograph/fingerprint capture at the border kiosk
  • Travel health insurance recommended, though not mandatory

Visa types

  • 30-day visa-free entry permit - automatically stamped on arrival at no charge for tourism or short business visits
  • East Africa Tourist Visa - single-entry visa valid for travel across Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, fee USD 100, valid 90 days
  • Business visa - for longer business stays, extendable, fee USD 50 for 30 days
  • Work permit - required for employment, arranged through Rwanda's Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay up to 30 days without any visa or fee under Rwanda's universal visa-free policy
  • Employment is not permitted under the free entry permit; a work permit is required for any paid work
  • On arrival at Kigali International Airport or land borders, present your passport and answer standard immigration questions
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested at the Immigration Head Office in Kigali for an additional fee, typically granted for another 30-90 days

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the standard 30-day visa-free entry
  • East Africa Tourist Visa (if visiting multiple countries): USD 100, issued on arrival or online in advance
  • Extension fee at Rwanda immigration office: approximately USD 40-50 for 30 additional days
  • Total cost for a standard visit: USD 0
  • Processing time: immediate at the border; extensions processed same-day to a few days at the immigration office

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Rwanda's visa-free policy applies to virtually all nationalities, so Canadians should not attempt to pre-apply for a visa online
  • Carry proof of a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you've transited through an at-risk country, as this is checked more strictly than the visa itself
  • If you plan to also visit Kenya or Uganda, buy the East Africa Tourist Visa before departure since it must be obtained before entering any of the three countries
  • Kigali International Airport immigration is efficient; land border crossings can be slower, so allow extra time during peak periods
  • To extend your stay, visit the Immigration Head Office in Kigali well before your 30 days expire to avoid overstay penalties
