Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket within 30 days
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Payment/proof of the Palau Pristine Paradise Environmental Fee (PPEF), collected via the Palau Pledge system before departure or at the airport
  • No advance visa application or photos required for the visa-on-arrival stamp
  • No biometrics beyond a standard passport photograph and occasional fingerprint scan at immigration

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: single entry, issued free of charge for up to 30 days, stamped directly in your passport at Roman Tmetuchl International Airport
  • Visa extension permit: for stays beyond 30 days, applied for in-country at the Bureau of Immigration, extendable up to a cumulative total of 1 year
  • Business/work visa: requires a local sponsor and work permit arranged in advance through the Palau Bureau of Labor, not available on arrival

Visa on arrival

  • Available only at Roman Tmetuchl International Airport (Koror/Airai) for Canadian passport holders arriving by air
  • Complete the arrival card and Environmental Fee payment (Palau Pledge) online before your flight, or pay in person at the airport
  • Present your passport, arrival card, return ticket and Environmental Fee receipt at the immigration counter
  • Immigration stamps a free 30-day tourist visa directly into your passport
  • Processing at the airport counter is usually quick, generally under 15-20 minutes outside peak arrival times
  • Keep your Palau Pledge stamp/sticker visible in your passport, as it may be checked when visiting dive sites and protected areas

Fees & processing time

  • The tourist visa itself is issued free of charge for the initial 30 days
  • The mandatory Pristine Paradise Environmental Fee (PPEF) is USD 100 per visitor, paid online at the Palau Pledge portal or at the airport before immigration
  • Visa extensions in-country cost approximately USD 50 per extension (up to several increments), processed at the Koror immigration office within 1-3 business days
  • No express visa-on-arrival option is needed since standard processing is already same-day
  • Departure tax is included in most airline tickets, but confirm with your carrier

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Pay the Pristine Paradise Environmental Fee online before departure to save time at the airport, since payment is mandatory before you can clear immigration
  • Palau's dive and marine protected areas often require an additional permit purchased locally; keep your Palau Pledge stamp for checks at popular sites like the Rock Islands
  • Flights to Palau are limited (mainly via Guam, Taiwan, or Manila), so confirm onward connections and book well ahead
  • If you wish to extend beyond 30 days, apply at the Koror immigration office at least a few days before your current permit expires
  • Carry proof of adequate travel/medical insurance, as Palau's medical facilities are limited for serious conditions and medevac to Guam or the Philippines may be necessary
