North Korea Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Canadian citizens require a DPRK tourist card and must travel on an organized tour booked through an approved DPRK tour operator; independent travel is not permitted and Canada's government advises against all travel to North Korea.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, with at least 2 blank pages
  • No independent visa application: your booked DPRK-approved tour operator (e.g. Koryo Tours, Young Pioneer Tours, Lupine Travel) submits your passport scan and a detailed application form to the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs on your behalf
  • Passport-size photos (2, 35mm x 45mm, white background) supplied to your tour operator
  • Journalists, aid workers and current/former military personnel typically face additional vetting or refusal
  • Travel health/medical evacuation insurance strongly recommended, since North Korea has extremely limited medical care for foreigners
  • Biometrics are not collected directly; your tour operator handles all paperwork with DPRK authorities

Visa types

  • Tourist Card (not a passport-stamped visa): issued for the exact dates of your pre-booked, escorted group or private tour; single-entry only, tied to your specific itinerary
  • Business/investment visa: rare, requires a DPRK-based sponsor or joint-venture partner and separate invitation letter
  • Journalist/media visa: requires accreditation through the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs press office, granted only for specific sanctioned events
  • All visa types are effectively arranged and guaranteed only through a licensed DPRK tour operator; there is no walk-in or embassy self-application route for tourists

How to apply

  • Book a fixed-departure or private tour with a DPRK-licensed operator (most run out of Beijing)
  • Submit passport photo page scan, application form and 2 photos to the operator 4-8 weeks before travel
  • The operator forwards your details to the DPRK Ministry of Foreign Affairs for approval
  • Most tourist entries are via Air Koryo or Air China flights from Beijing, or the Beijing-Pyongyang train; some tours also enter via the Rason Special Economic Zone near the Russia-DPRK-China border
  • Approval typically arrives 5-10 business days before departure as a tour confirmation rather than a physical visa; the Tourist Card itself is often issued in Beijing or on arrival
  • No individual travel is permitted at any point: you are accompanied by DPRK state guides for the entire trip

Fees & processing time

  • No separate government visa fee is charged directly to travelers; the Tourist Card cost is bundled into your tour package price
  • Tour packages typically range from USD 1,500-3,000+ for a 4-6 day trip, depending on season and group size
  • Processing/approval takes roughly 2-4 weeks after booking, though last-minute approvals (5-10 days) are sometimes possible with Beijing-based operators
  • No expedited or rush-visa option exists outside your tour operator's standard timeline
  • Additional costs: mandatory guide fees, DPRK-run hotel, and meals are bundled; personal spending money in EUR, USD or CNY cash is needed, as no card payments are accepted

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Global Affairs Canada advises against all travel to North Korea due to the risk of arbitrary detention and limited consular access; read the advisory before booking
  • Canada has no embassy in Pyongyang; consular assistance would be extremely limited and is generally routed through the Swedish embassy, which represents Canadian interests
  • Book through an established, experienced operator with a strong track record on the Beijing-Pyongyang route; entry rules change with little notice, so confirm current conditions directly with them
  • Do not bring GPS devices, drones, telephoto lenses, publications about North Korea, or religious materials; customs inspections at entry are thorough
  • Mobile phones are permitted but foreign SIM data roaming is unavailable; local SIM cards with limited international calling can be rented
  • There is no extension or change-of-itinerary option once in-country; any deviation from the approved group itinerary is not allowed
