What you need

  • Valid Canadian passport with at least 6 months' validity remaining and at least two blank pages
  • Completed online e-Visa application at portal.immigration.gov.ng
  • Digital passport photo meeting the portal's specifications
  • Scanned passport bio page
  • Invitation letter (for business visas) or hotel booking/itinerary (for tourist visas)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • Proof of sufficient funds and return/onward travel
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are captured on arrival at the airport, in addition to the online application

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa: single entry, valid 90 days from issuance for entry, allows a stay of up to 90 days
  • Business e-Visa: single or multiple entry, requires a Nigerian company invitation letter, similar validity
  • Visa-on-arrival (for pre-approved categories such as investors or holders of specific business endorsements): a separate pre-approval process through the immigration portal
  • Most Canadian visitors apply for the standard Tourist or Business e-Visa.

How to apply online

  • Register and complete the application at portal.immigration.gov.ng, selecting Tourist or Business e-Visa
  • Upload your passport scan, photo, and supporting documents (invitation letter, hotel booking, or business letter)
  • Pay the fee online by credit/debit card — approximately USD 160 total for a single-entry tourist e-visa including the visa fee and portal service charge (fees vary by category)
  • Processing typically takes about 5 business days; approval is sent electronically as a pre-approval letter
  • Print the pre-approval letter and present it with your passport on arrival, where your visa is finalized and biometrics are captured

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist e-Visa: approximately USD 160 total (visa fee plus portal service charge)
  • Business e-Visa: fees vary, generally USD 160-200 depending on entries and duration requested
  • Standard processing time: about 5 business days
  • No official express option is advertised; apply at least 2-3 weeks before travel to allow buffer time for review or document requests

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Apply well ahead of travel, since business e-visas depend on a timely invitation letter from your Nigerian host or partner
  • Common delays include incomplete invitation letters and photos that don't meet the portal's technical specifications
  • Only use the official government portal (portal.immigration.gov.ng) — third-party sites charging extra processing fees are not authorized
  • The Canadian High Commission in Abuja and Consulate in Lagos can assist with emergencies and passport services
  • Confirm current Global Affairs Canada travel advisories, particularly for travel outside major cities, before finalizing your itinerary
