New Zealand Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

Canadian citizens need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before flying — apply online or via the mobile app; fee NZD 17-23 plus the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy, usually approved within minutes to 72 hours.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid Canadian passport with at least 3 months' validity remaining beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
  • Approved NZeTA linked to your passport number before boarding your flight
  • A digital passport photo may be uploaded, though it's optional for the NZeTA itself
  • Proof of onward/return travel, as airlines check NZeTA status before boarding
  • Evidence of sufficient funds may be requested by border officials on arrival
  • Travel health insurance is strongly recommended, as New Zealand's public healthcare does not cover most visitors
  • No in-person biometrics required for the NZeTA

Visa types

  • NZeTA (visa waiver traveller): covers tourism, business meetings, and stays up to 90 days, multiple entry, valid for 2 years or until passport expiry
  • Visitor visa: required only if staying longer than the visa waiver allows or for purposes beyond a short visit, applied for through Immigration New Zealand
  • Work/study visas: separate applications required, not covered by the NZeTA
  • Most Canadian travelers only need the standard NZeTA.

How to apply online

  • Apply via the New Zealand ETA mobile app (lowest fee) or at immigration.govt.nz (slightly higher fee)
  • Provide passport details, travel plans, and answer standard eligibility/health/character questions
  • Pay the NZeTA fee (NZD 17 via the app, NZD 23 via the website) plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100
  • Most applications are approved within minutes, though some take up to 72 hours if manual review is needed
  • No physical document is issued — approval is linked electronically to your passport number, so carry the same passport used in the application

Fees & processing time

  • NZeTA fee: NZD 17 (mobile app) or NZD 23 (website/third-party)
  • International Visitor Levy (IVL): NZD 100, paid together with the NZeTA application
  • Total cost: approximately NZD 117-123 (~USD 70-75)
  • Standard processing: usually within minutes; up to 72 hours in some cases
  • No separate express option; apply at least 72 hours before travel to allow for manual review time

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Apply for your NZeTA at least a few days before booking or boarding your flight, since airlines can deny boarding without an approved NZeTA
  • Use the mobile app for the lowest fee and easiest document upload
  • Common issues include mismatched passport details between the application and passport, or an expiring passport with insufficient remaining validity
  • The NZeTA is tied to your specific passport — get a new NZeTA if you renew your passport before travelling
  • The Canadian High Commission in Wellington can assist with emergencies; routine visa questions go through Immigration New Zealand
