Netherlands Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter the Netherlands visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen visa waiver.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid Canadian passport with at least 3 months' validity remaining beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area
  • No visa required for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of sufficient funds and a return/onward ticket may be requested at the border
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, including repatriation, is recommended for the whole Schengen area
  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry

Visa types

  • No visa is required for short Canadian visits. For other purposes:
  • Long-stay (MVV) visa and residence permit: required for stays beyond 90 days, work, or study, applied for through the Netherlands' IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) or a Dutch consulate
  • Schengen short-stay visa: not needed by Canadians for stays under 90 days
  • Business Schengen visa: also not required for Canadians for standard business trips under 90 days
  • Most Canadian tourists and business travelers need no visa at all.

Entry conditions

  • Stay is capped at 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, shared across the entire Schengen area, not just the Netherlands
  • Employment is not permitted under visa-free entry; a work permit and residence permit are required for paid work
  • Present your passport at border control (or via automated e-gates at Schiphol for eligible travelers); no visa stamp is issued
  • To stay longer than 90 days or work/study, apply for the appropriate long-stay visa/MVV before travelling
  • Track your Schengen days if visiting multiple European countries on the same trip, since the limit is cumulative

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-free entry
  • A long-stay (MVV) visa application costs approximately EUR 210 (~USD 230) for most categories, with reduced or waived fees for some family/student cases
  • Standard MVV/residence permit processing takes about 90 days from a complete application
  • No visa fee or processing time applies for short tourist or business visits since no visa is required

Tips for Canada travelers

  • The Canadian Embassy in The Hague can assist with passport and emergency services
  • Use Schiphol's automated border e-gates if eligible to speed up arrival processing
  • Keep track of cumulative Schengen days across your whole trip, not just time spent in the Netherlands
  • Book accommodation and popular attractions (e.g., Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum) in advance, as timed tickets sell out
  • Carry proof of return travel and accommodation, as spot checks do occur, particularly for one-way ticket holders
