Nepal Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa on Arrival

Canadian citizens can obtain a visa on arrival in Nepal at Tribhuvan International Airport or major land border crossings; a 30-day tourist visa costs USD 50.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid Canadian passport with at least 6 months' validity remaining and at least one blank page
  • Completed Nepal arrival visa form (available online in advance via the Department of Immigration's Online Visa Application system, or on paper on arrival)
  • One passport-size photo (the airport's kiosk can also capture a photo digitally)
  • Sufficient funds to pay the visa fee in cash (USD or major convertible currencies; Indian rupees are not accepted)
  • Proof of onward/return travel may be requested
  • Travel/medical insurance, including emergency evacuation coverage, is strongly recommended for trekking or high-altitude travel
  • No advance biometrics required; fingerprints/photo captured at the immigration counter

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: 15 days (USD 30), 30 days (USD 50), or 90 days (USD 125), multiple entry
  • Gratis (free) visa: occasionally offered for very short transit stays or specific bilateral arrangements — confirm current eligibility before relying on this
  • Trekking permits (e.g., TIMS card, Annapurna/Everest region permits) are separate from the visa and required for most trekking routes
  • Most Canadian tourists choose the 30-day multiple-entry tourist visa.

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) and at major land border crossings with India — not all land crossings offer on-arrival visas, so confirm your specific crossing
  • Pre-fill the online arrival form (available at immigration.gov.np) to speed up processing, though it isn't strictly mandatory
  • Pay the visa fee in cash (USD preferred) at the bank counter inside the arrival hall, then submit your form and receipt at the visa counter
  • Processing at the airport typically takes 15-45 minutes depending on queue length
  • Land border visa-on-arrival can be slower and less predictable; airport arrival is generally more reliable

Fees & processing time

  • 15-day visa: USD 30
  • 30-day visa: USD 50
  • 90-day visa: USD 125
  • No separate service fee at the airport counter itself
  • On-the-spot processing: roughly 15-45 minutes at Kathmandu airport under normal traffic
  • No express option needed since on-arrival processing is already fast; extensions inside Nepal are handled by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Bring exact USD cash for the visa fee — currency exchange counters at the arrival hall can have long queues
  • Complete the online pre-arrival form if possible to shorten the on-arrival queue, especially during peak trekking seasons (March-May, September-November)
  • Canada has no embassy in Nepal; consular services are provided through the Canadian Embassy in New Delhi, India, and an honorary consul in Kathmandu for limited assistance
  • Purchase adequate travel insurance with high-altitude/helicopter evacuation coverage if trekking
  • Visa extensions and additional trekking permits are handled at the Department of Immigration office in Kathmandu, not at the border
