Montenegro Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Montenegro visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid Canadian passport with at least 3 months' validity beyond your planned departure date
  • No visa required for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of onward/return travel may be requested at the border
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, rental agreement, or host invitation)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, particularly since Montenegro is outside the EU health-coverage network
  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry

Visa types

  • No visa is required for short Canadian visits. Longer or purpose-specific stays require:
  • Temporary residence permit: for stays beyond 90 days, work, or study, applied for at a local Administration for Internal Affairs office inside Montenegro
  • Business visa/invitation-based entry: not typically required for Canadians but may support residence applications
  • Most Canadian tourists and business travelers will not need either category.

Entry conditions

  • Visa-free stay is capped at 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Foreign nationals, including Canadians, must register their place of stay with local police or their hotel within 24 hours of arrival (hotels normally do this automatically)
  • Employment is not permitted without a separate work and residence permit
  • Present your passport and, if asked, accommodation proof at the border; no visa stamp is issued
  • To stay longer than 90 days, apply for a temporary residence permit before the visa-free period lapses

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-free entry
  • A temporary residence permit application costs approximately EUR 40-80 (~USD 43-87) depending on category, plus document translation/notarization costs
  • Processing for a residence permit typically takes 30-60 days
  • No visa fee applies since Canadians do not require a visa for tourism or short business trips

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Montenegro has no Canadian embassy; consular services are provided by the Canadian Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, or Rome, Italy
  • Confirm your hotel registers your stay with police — unregistered stays can cause problems when leaving the country
  • Carry your accommodation confirmation, especially for private rentals or Airbnb stays
  • Montenegro is not in the Schengen area, so its 90/180 day count is separate from any Schengen travel on the same trip
  • Coastal areas (Budva, Kotor) get very busy July-August; book accommodation well in advance
