Monaco Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Monaco visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, since Monaco has open borders with France inside the Schengen area.

Guide last updated September 30, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Valid Canadian passport with at least 3 months' validity beyond your planned departure date (Schengen standard)
  • No visa required; entry and exit are typically via France with no separate border control
  • Proof of sufficient funds and a return/onward ticket may be requested when entering the wider Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation) in Monaco or nearby France
  • Travel/medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended for the Schengen area
  • No biometrics required for this visa-free stay

Visa types

  • No visa category applies to short Canadian visits. For stays beyond 90 days or residence in Monaco:
  • Monaco temporary residence card (carte de sejour temporaire): for those establishing residence, requires proof of accommodation and financial means, applied for at the Monaco Residents' Office
  • Long-stay French Schengen visa: needed first if arriving from outside the Schengen area for extended stays, since Monaco relies on France for border formalities
  • Tourists and business visitors from Canada do not need either.

Entry conditions

  • Stay is capped at 90 days within any 180-day period, counted jointly with the rest of the Schengen area since Monaco has no independent border with France
  • Employment in Monaco is not permitted without a work authorization and residence permit
  • Entry is usually via Nice Cote d'Azur Airport (France) followed by road, rail, or helicopter transfer to Monaco; passport checks happen at the French/Schengen external border
  • Keep track of days spent across all Schengen countries, not just Monaco, since the 90/180 limit is shared
  • Overstaying can result in fines and future Schengen entry bans

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-free entry
  • If a Schengen long-stay or residence visa is later required, French/Monegasque consular fees are approximately EUR 99 (~USD 108) for a standard Schengen visa application, processed in about 15 calendar days
  • Monaco residence card applications, once in-country, typically take 4-8 weeks
  • No express visa option applies since visa-free entry requires no application

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Monaco has no Canadian embassy; the nearest is the Canadian Consulate General in Nice or the Embassy in Paris
  • Book Monaco accommodation in advance, especially during the Formula 1 Grand Prix (May) and Monaco Yacht Show (September)
  • Since arrival is normally through France, French Schengen entry rules (not Monaco's) govern your passport check
  • Carry proof of your Monaco hotel or a local host's invitation if questioned at the French border
  • Track your cumulative Schengen days using the EU's online Schengen calculator tool if visiting multiple European countries on the same trip
