Visa Free

Canadian citizens can visit Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days as tourists, receiving a Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) tourist card on arrival.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your stay (no minimum extra validity mandated, but at least the length of your trip is recommended)
  • Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) tourist card - completed online in advance or on arrival (often included in airfare when flying in)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking) may be requested
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • No biometrics required for standard tourist entry
  • Travel health insurance recommended, especially given the cost of private healthcare in Mexico

Visa types

  • Not applicable for stays under 180 days - visa-free tourist and business entry via the FMM
  • For work or long-term residency, a Temporary Resident Visa or Permanent Resident Visa is required, applied for at a Mexican consulate in Canada before travel

Entry conditions

  • Canadian passport holders may stay in Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days as tourists, using the FMM tourist card
  • No paid employment permitted under this entry
  • The FMM is often issued automatically as part of the airfare when flying commercially into Mexico; land border crossers must complete and pay for it separately
  • Keep the FMM slip safe throughout your stay, as it must be surrendered on departure
  • Extensions beyond 180 days are not available - travelers must exit and, if eligible, re-enter for a new tourist period

Fees & processing time

  • FMM fee: approximately MXN 700 (about USD 40), usually bundled into the airfare for air arrivals; payable separately at land borders
  • No additional service fee for air arrivals where the fee is pre-collected
  • No processing time - issued immediately on arrival or check-in
  • No express option needed given the instant issuance

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Keep your FMM tourist card (paper or digital) safe for the entire trip - losing it can delay departure and may incur a replacement fee
  • If entering by land, budget extra time to pay the FMM fee at the border crossing
  • Some destinations near the US border can be entered under a shorter-stay simplified process - confirm your specific FMM validity at entry
  • Don't overstay the granted period noted on your FMM, as this can result in fines or future entry difficulties
  • Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended given significant private healthcare costs for visitors
