Visa on Arrival

Canadian citizens receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives, extendable up to 90 days, after completing the mandatory online IMUGA arrival declaration.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival date
  • IMUGA online Traveller Health Declaration and immigration form completed within 96 hours before arrival
  • Confirmed resort, guesthouse, or hotel booking (or a local sponsor's address)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds, generally expected to be around USD 100/day plus USD 25/day per accompanying person
  • No biometrics required beyond a photo taken at immigration
  • Travel health/medical evacuation insurance strongly recommended given the remote atoll geography

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: free, single entry, valid for 30 days, extendable
  • Business visa: available for those with a local sponsoring company, similar validity, arranged in advance with the sponsor
  • No separate e-Visa is required - the online IMUGA declaration serves as pre-arrival clearance, not a visa application

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Velana International Airport (Malé) and other designated entry points
  • Complete the IMUGA declaration online before departure; present the QR code confirmation along with your passport at immigration
  • No fee is charged for the standard 30-day tourist visa on arrival
  • Processing at the immigration desk typically takes only a few minutes once the IMUGA form is verified
  • Resort staff often assist arriving guests through the immigration process at the airport

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the initial 30-day visa on arrival
  • IMUGA declaration is free and takes about 5-10 minutes online
  • Extension fee (for stays beyond 30 days, up to 90 days total) is approximately USD 30-50 per extension, processed at the Immigration Department in Malé within 1-3 business days
  • No express visa option needed, as entry is granted immediately on arrival

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Complete the IMUGA form no earlier than 96 hours before arrival to avoid rejection for being submitted too early
  • Book your resort transfer in advance, since domestic seaplane or speedboat connections from Malé can be limited late at night
  • Carry proof of your booking on your phone or printed, as it may be requested at immigration
  • If planning to stay beyond 30 days, start the extension process at the Malé immigration office well before the initial visa expires
  • Alcohol is restricted outside resort islands - be aware of local laws if visiting local inhabited islands
