Visa on Arrival

Canadian citizens can obtain a visa on arrival in Madagascar for tourism, or pre-apply via the e-Visa portal before travel.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival date
  • Completed arrival form (or online e-Visa pre-registration)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Passport photo (standard passport-size, white background) may be requested
  • No biometrics required beyond a photo/fingerprint scan sometimes taken at the airport counter
  • Travel/health insurance recommended, especially given limited medical facilities outside Antananarivo

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: single entry, valid for stays up to 90 days, issued at the airport
  • Business visa on arrival: single entry, similar validity, requires an invitation letter from a Malagasy company
  • e-Visa (via evisamada.gov.mg): same categories, processed online before travel to skip the airport queue

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Ivato International Airport (Antananarivo) and other official entry points
  • Complete the arrival card and present it with your passport at the visa counter before immigration
  • Fee is payable in cash (Euros or US Dollars preferred) or, where available, by card
  • Processing typically takes 15-30 minutes depending on queue length
  • Alternatively, apply online in advance through the official e-Visa portal (evisamada.gov.mg) to receive pre-approval and reduce airport wait time

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: approximately EUR 25-40 (about USD 27-43) for stays up to 30 days; higher for 60- or 90-day validity
  • No separate service fee when paid at the airport counter
  • On-arrival processing: 15-30 minutes
  • e-Visa online processing: typically 1-3 business days before travel, with instant download of the approval letter

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Pre-applying online via the e-Visa portal avoids long queues at Ivato Airport, especially on flights arriving late at night
  • Carry small denomination Euros or US Dollars, since change may not always be available at the visa counter
  • Confirm your hotel booking in writing, as it may be requested by the visa officer
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate may be requested if arriving from an at-risk country
  • Extensions beyond the initial visa period can be arranged at the immigration office in Antananarivo before expiry
