Japan Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business under Japan's reciprocal visa exemption arrangement — no visa or online authorization currently required.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the entire intended stay in Japan
  • No visa application — a Disembarkation Card and Customs Declaration are filled out on the flight or at kiosks on arrival
  • Fingerprint and photo biometrics are collected at immigration for nearly all foreign arrivals (Japan's standard entry biometrics, not visa-related)
  • Proof of onward/return ticket and sufficient funds may be requested
  • Accommodation details (hotel reservation or host address)
  • Travel health insurance is not mandatory but recommended given Japan's high medical costs

Visa types

  • No visa is required for short tourism or business visits under the Japan-Canada visa exemption arrangement.
  • Temporary Visitor status: granted on arrival, up to 90 days, single entry per trip, no fee
  • Business, study, or work purposes beyond short visits require a specific visa (e.g., Working Holiday, Student) applied for at a Japanese embassy/consulate before travel

Entry conditions

  • Stay permitted: up to 90 days for tourism, visiting family/friends, or short business meetings
  • Paid work is not permitted under Temporary Visitor status
  • Immigration officers may request proof of a return ticket, funds, and trip purpose at the airport
  • Overstaying even by a day can result in fines, detention, or bans on future entry — stays cannot be extended past 90 days from within Japan for tourists

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: none for the 90-day visa-exempt entry
  • No VFS/BLS or embassy service fee applies
  • Total cost: JPY 0 for entry itself (Japan's International Tourist Tax of JPY 1,000 is usually collected on departure, bundled into airfare)
  • Processing time: immediate at the airport immigration counter
  • Note: Japan has announced a future pre-travel electronic authorization system (JESTA) but it was not yet mandatory as of this guide's writing — check jesta.mofa.go.jp closer to your travel date

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Use the automated e-gates at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai if you have a Canadian e-passport — they speed up immigration significantly
  • Keep your Disembarkation Card stub (stapled into your passport) — it must be surrendered at departure
  • Book accommodation before arrival; some hotels ask for it during check-in and immigration officers occasionally spot-check
  • Carry a valid credit card or cash — Japan remains more cash-reliant than Canada outside major cities
  • Monitor Global Affairs Canada's travel advisory and jesta.mofa.go.jp for any change to the visa-exempt status before booking
