Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Italy and the rest of the Schengen Area visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • No biometrics required for visa-free Canadian entry currently; EES biometric registration will apply once the EU system is operational
  • Travel/medical insurance covering the Schengen Area: strongly recommended, not formally mandated for visa-free entry

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism or business visits up to 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Long-stay national (type D) visa required for stays over 90 days, study, or work, applied for through the Italian Consulate General in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver)
  • Elective residency or work visa required for longer stays, separate from the standard tourist entry, and typically requires proof of income or employer sponsorship

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area combined, not per country
  • Paid work is not permitted under the visa-free tourist entry
  • On arrival at any Italian airport or Schengen entry point, present your passport for a stamp confirming your entry date
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only granted in exceptional circumstances via the local Questura (police headquarters) responsible for immigration matters

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-free entry
  • No service fee
  • Total cost: none beyond standard airport taxes
  • Processing time: immediate at the border
  • Once mandatory, ETIAS pre-travel authorization will cost approximately EUR 7 and typically clear within minutes to a few days

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Track your cumulative Schengen days carefully if visiting multiple Schengen countries on the same trip, since Italy shares the same 90/180 quota with all other Schengen states
  • Common issues: travelers miscalculate days from prior Schengen trips earlier in the same 180-day window, leading to entry refusal or fines
  • If planning to work remotely for a Canadian employer while in Italy for an extended period, check current rules on digital nomad visas, since casual remote work during a short visit is a legal gray area
  • ETIAS registration, once required, should be completed several days before departure to allow processing time
