Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival
  • Digital passport-style photo for the online application
  • Scanned copy of passport bio-data page
  • Confirmed return/onward flight ticket
  • Hotel booking or accommodation details
  • No in-person biometrics required for the e-Visa itself, though biometric photo/fingerprints may be collected on arrival at some airports
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not formally mandatory

Visa types

  • e-Visa (tourist/business): single entry, valid for a stay of up to 60 days, fee approximately USD 75-80
  • Note: the federal Iraq e-Visa covers entry through Baghdad, Basra, Najaf, and other federal airports; the Kurdistan Region (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah) operates a separate visa-on-arrival system available to many nationalities including Canada, issued free or low-cost directly at Erbil/Sulaymaniyah airports for shorter stays
  • Longer-stay or work visas require a separate application through an Iraqi embassy/consulate and are not available online

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official portal: evisa.gov.iq
  • Steps: register an account, complete the application form, upload passport scan and photo, pay the fee online by credit/debit card, receive the e-Visa approval by email as a PDF
  • Fee: approximately USD 75-80, paid online in USD via the portal
  • Processing time: typically 3-5 business days, though it can occasionally take longer; apply at least 1-2 weeks before travel to allow buffer time
  • Approval arrives as a PDF e-Visa document - print a copy to present at immigration along with your passport on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • e-Visa fee: approximately USD 75-80 for federal Iraq entry
  • Kurdistan Region visa on arrival: often free or a nominal fee (varies) for eligible nationalities including Canada, issued directly at Erbil or Sulaymaniyah airport
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee for the federal e-Visa, since it is processed entirely online
  • Total cost estimate: USD 75-85 for the federal e-Visa route
  • Standard processing time: 3-5 business days online; Kurdistan Region VOA is issued immediately on arrival

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Check Global Affairs Canada's travel advisory before planning any trip - Canada advises against all travel to most of Iraq due to security risks, with a somewhat less severe advisory for the Kurdistan Region
  • Decide in advance whether you are entering via federal Iraq (requiring the evisa.gov.iq e-Visa) or directly into the Kurdistan Region (using the separate Kurdistan VOA) - the two systems are not interchangeable at points of entry
  • Common issues: applying for the wrong visa type for your entry airport, or blurry document uploads causing processing delays
  • Extensions beyond the visa's validity must be arranged with Iraqi immigration authorities before expiry and are not guaranteed
  • Given the security situation, register your trip with Global Affairs Canada and arrange vetted local transport and security support if travel is unavoidable
