India Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

Canadian citizens need an e-Visa for India, applied for online at indianvisaonline.gov.in before travel; the e-Tourist visa costs from about USD 25-80 depending on duration and typically processes within 3-5 business days.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Digital passport-style photograph (white background, specific pixel/size specs per the e-Visa portal)
  • Scanned copy of the passport bio-data page
  • Confirmed return/onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds may be requested
  • No physical biometrics required for the e-Tourist visa; biometrics only apply if applying for a regular sticker visa in person
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory for the e-Visa

Visa types

  • e-Tourist Visa: 30-day (double entry), 1-year (multiple entry), or 5-year (multiple entry) validity options; fees approximately USD 25 (30-day), USD 40 (1-year), and USD 80 (5-year), though exact fees vary by season
  • e-Business Visa: 1-year multiple entry, fee around USD 80, requires a business invitation letter
  • e-Medical Visa and e-Conference Visa also available online for specific purposes with their own documentation requirements
  • Regular sticker visas (longer-term work, student, journalist, etc.) require in-person application via a visa application center and are not available online

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in (beware of unofficial lookalike sites charging inflated fees)
  • Steps: create an account, complete the online application form, upload photo and passport scan, pay the fee online by credit/debit card, receive an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) by email
  • Fee: approximately USD 25-80 depending on visa duration, paid in USD equivalent via the portal (Visa/Mastercard accepted, plus a small bank processing fee)
  • Processing time: typically 3-5 business days, though it can take up to 72 hours in normal circumstances - apply at least a week before travel to allow buffer time
  • Approval arrives as an email with the ETA reference; print a copy to carry, since it is checked (along with your passport) at immigration on arrival at one of India's designated e-Visa airports/seaports

Fees & processing time

  • e-Visa fee: approximately USD 25 (30-day tourist), USD 40 (1-year tourist), USD 80 (5-year tourist), paid online in USD
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee since the e-Visa bypasses in-person application centers
  • Total cost estimate: USD 25-80 plus a minor card processing surcharge
  • Standard processing time: 3-5 business days
  • Express option: none formally offered, though applying well in advance avoids delays from portal backlogs

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Apply at least 7-10 days before your trip to allow for processing delays and to leave room to correct any application errors
  • Common rejection/delay reasons: mismatched name spelling between passport and application, blurry photo/passport scan uploads, incomplete previous-visa-to-India history fields
  • Only use the official government portal - third-party sites often charge significantly more for the same service
  • The e-Visa is valid for entry only through designated airports and seaports (major international airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru are all included) - confirm your entry point qualifies
  • Extensions of e-Visa stay are generally not permitted; if you need longer than your visa allows, apply for the appropriate longer-duration e-Visa or a regular visa in advance
