Iceland Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Iceland and the rest of the Schengen Area visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • No biometrics required for visa-free Canadian entry currently; EES biometric registration will apply once the EU system is operational
  • Travel/medical insurance: strongly recommended given Iceland's remote terrain and higher medical costs

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism or business visits up to 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Long-stay national (type D) visa required for stays over 90 days or study, applied for through the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration or an Icelandic mission abroad
  • Work permit required for employment, generally sponsored by an Icelandic employer and applied for before arrival

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period, shared across the whole Schengen Area
  • Paid work is not permitted under visa-free tourist entry
  • On arrival at Keflavik International Airport or another port of entry, present your passport for a stamp confirming entry
  • Extensions are rarely granted for tourist stays; any request goes through the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration (Útlendingastofnun)

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-free entry
  • No service fee
  • Total cost: none beyond standard airport taxes
  • Processing time: immediate at the border
  • Once mandatory, ETIAS pre-travel authorization will cost approximately EUR 7 and typically clear within minutes to a few days

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Track cumulative Schengen days if combining Iceland with travel to other Schengen countries, since the 90/180 quota is shared
  • Common issues: underestimating how remote conditions (weather closures, single-road routes) can affect onward travel plans and connections
  • Book winter travel insurance covering weather-related cancellations, common in Iceland's road network
  • ETIAS registration, once required, should be completed at least a few days before departure to allow for processing
