Hungary Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Hungary and the rest of the Schengen Area visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of sufficient funds (approximately EUR 100/day is a common informal benchmark some border officers apply)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • No biometrics required on arrival for visa-free Canadian visitors
  • Travel/medical insurance covering the Schengen Area: strongly recommended, not formally mandated for visa-free entry
  • Note: starting with the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) rollout, biometric registration (fingerprints and photo) will be collected on first entry once the system is operational

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism or business visits up to 90 days within any 180-day period (Schengen short-stay rule)
  • Long-stay national (type D) visa is required for stays over 90 days, study, or work, applied for directly through the Hungarian Embassy/Consulate in Canada
  • Work permit combined with a residence permit required for employment, sponsored by a Hungarian employer, separate from the tourist entry

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area combined, not per country
  • Work is not permitted under the visa-free tourist entry
  • On arrival, present your passport at border control; a stamp (or EES biometric registration once live) records the entry date
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only granted in exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure) via the Hungarian immigration authority (Bevándorlási és Menekültügyi Hivatal)

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-free entry
  • No service fee
  • Total cost: none beyond standard airport taxes
  • Processing time: immediate at the border
  • Once ETIAS (EU's electronic travel authorization for visa-exempt visitors) becomes mandatory, Canadians will need to apply online in advance for approximately EUR 7, with typical approval within minutes to a few days

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Track your Schengen days carefully using the 90/180-day rule if visiting multiple Schengen countries on one trip, since Hungary shares the same quota with all other Schengen states
  • Common issues: travelers miscalculate cumulative Schengen days from prior trips, leading to entry refusal
  • Keep an eye on the ETIAS rollout timeline before booking, as this pre-travel authorization will become a new requirement for Canadians
  • Extensions are rarely granted for tourism purposes - plan your itinerary to stay within the 90-day allowance
