Visa Free

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended length of stay (Hong Kong does not require 6-month validity, but airlines often do for boarding)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
  • Proof of accommodation
  • No visa application form required
  • No biometrics required for entry (facial recognition e-Channel available for eligible travelers on repeat visits)
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • No visa is required for Canadian citizens visiting for tourism or business for up to 90 days
  • Employment visa is required for any paid work in Hong Kong, applied for through the Hong Kong Immigration Department, typically sponsored by an employer, separate from the visa-free tourist entry
  • Student visa similarly requires a separate application sponsored by an accredited institution

Entry conditions

  • Canadians are admitted visa-free for up to 90 days as visitors
  • Employment or study without the correct visa is prohibited
  • On arrival at Hong Kong International Airport, present your passport at an immigration counter or use an e-Channel kiosk if eligible; a landing slip/stamp confirms the permitted stay
  • Extensions of stay can be requested at the Hong Kong Immigration Department Headquarters in Wan Chai, generally requiring a good reason and supporting documents; extensions are not guaranteed

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee since entry is visa-free
  • No service fee
  • Total cost: none beyond standard airport departure tax, usually included in airfare
  • Processing time: immediate at the port of entry, typically a few minutes through e-Channel or a standard counter
  • No express option needed

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Carry proof of onward travel and accommodation, as immigration officers occasionally request these on arrival
  • Common issues: travelers overstaying the 90-day limit face fines and possible entry bans on future visits
  • If continuing to mainland China from Hong Kong, remember mainland China requires a separate visa or eVisa for most Canadians - Hong Kong's visa-free entry does not cover the mainland
  • Register for the e-Channel facial recognition service on a prior visit to speed up future arrivals
