Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of return or onward travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (roughly EUR 50-100/day is a common guideline, rarely checked for Canadians)
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended
  • No visa application, photos, or biometrics required for the visa-free stay

Visa types

  • No visa required for stays up to 90 days for tourism or business
  • Long-term visa/residence permit: required for stays beyond 90 days, study, or work, applied for at the Czech Embassy in Ottawa before travel
  • ETIAS: Canadian visa-exempt travelers will need to register online before travel once the system is in force; check the current rollout status before booking

Entry conditions

  • Canadians may stay up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not per country
  • Working during the visa-free stay is not permitted
  • Border officers may request proof of funds, accommodation, and onward travel
  • Time spent in the Czech Republic counts toward your total Schengen 90/180-day allowance shared with all other Schengen states visited on the same trip
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are granted only in exceptional cases through the Czech Foreign Police (Cizinecká policie)

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the visa-free stay
  • ETIAS, once required, will cost approximately EUR 7 and process within minutes to a few days
  • No standard processing time applies since no advance visa application is needed

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Track your cumulative Schengen days across your whole trip using the official Schengen calculator if visiting more than one EU country
  • Keep travel insurance documentation on hand in case of a border check
  • Register your itinerary with Global Affairs Canada before departure
  • Prague's airport occasionally does spot checks on return tickets and funds for non-EU travelers — have printed or digital copies ready
  • If you plan to study, work, or stay long-term, apply for the appropriate Czech visa at the embassy in Ottawa well before your trip, as it cannot be converted from visa-free status after arrival
