Cape Verde Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Cabo Verde visa-free for stays of up to 30 days for tourism or business.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your stay (a validity of at least 6 months beyond arrival is recommended)
  • At least one blank visa page
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • No biometrics required for visa-exempt entry
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, not mandatory

Visa types

  • Canadian citizens do not need a visa for tourism or business visits of up to 30 days. For other purposes:
  • Long-stay visa: required for stays beyond 30 days, applied for at a Cabo Verdean consulate
  • Work visa: required for any paid employment, sponsored by a local employer
  • Student visa: required for enrolment in a Cabo Verdean educational institution

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 30 days under the visa exemption
  • Employment is not permitted on the visa-free entry
  • On arrival, present your passport and return ticket; immigration stamps the passport with the permitted stay
  • Extensions can be requested at the Immigration and Borders Service (Direção Nacional de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Empresarial e Competitividade / immigration office) in Praia before the initial period expires, subject to a fee
  • Overstaying can result in fines assessed on departure

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the visa-exempt entry
  • Entry processing at the airport takes a few minutes
  • Extension fee (if needed): a modest administrative charge, processed within a few working days at the immigration office
  • No service/agency fee since no advance application is required

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Carry proof of accommodation and return travel, as these are the most common items checked at entry
  • If you plan to stay longer than 30 days (common for those visiting the islands extensively), plan your extension request early, since offices are limited outside Praia and Mindelo
  • Many flights from Canada connect through Lisbon or Boston — check any transit visa requirements for your connecting country
  • Cabo Verde's currency (escudo) is pegged to the euro; carry euros or use ATMs, as USD/CAD cash exchange can be limited outside Praia
  • If you intend to work or volunteer, arrange the correct visa before travel — this cannot be converted from the visa-exempt entry
