Bulgaria Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Bulgaria visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, as Bulgaria applies the Schengen short-stay rules since joining the Schengen area in 2024.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date, issued within the last 10 years
  • At least one blank visa page
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (guideline around EUR 50 per day, though rarely checked for Canadian citizens)
  • Travel/medical insurance is recommended, covering at least EUR 30,000, though not systematically checked at the border for visa-exempt travelers
  • No biometrics required for entry under the visa waiver

Visa types

  • Canadian citizens do not need a visa for tourism or business visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area (Bulgaria's stays now count toward the same 90/180 limit as other Schengen states). For other purposes:
  • National (type D) visa: required for stays over 90 days, study, or work, applied for at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate
  • Work permit combined with a D visa: required for any employment in Bulgaria
  • Student visa: required for course durations exceeding 90 days

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, shared with time spent elsewhere in the Schengen area
  • Employment is not permitted on a visa-exempt short stay
  • Border officials may ask for proof of purpose of visit, funds, and accommodation, and will stamp the passport with the entry date
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are not generally granted for tourism; travelers needing more time must apply for a national visa in advance
  • Overstaying can trigger Schengen-wide entry bans, so track your cumulative days carefully if you visit other Schengen countries on the same trip

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the visa-exempt short stay
  • Entry processing at the border takes only a few minutes
  • A national (type D) visa, if needed for longer stays, costs around EUR 75–100 and takes 15 business days to process at the embassy
  • No service center fee applies to visa-exempt tourist/business entry

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Track your Schengen 90/180-day count if you're also visiting other Schengen countries on the same trip, since Bulgaria now shares that quota
  • Carry proof of return travel and accommodation, as these are the most common items checked at EU external borders
  • Consider travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 medical coverage even though it isn't systematically checked, since Canadian provincial health plans don't cover care in Bulgaria
  • If planning to work, study long-term, or move to Bulgaria, apply for the correct national visa before departure — this cannot be converted from a visa-exempt entry
  • Border checks can be slower at land crossings from non-Schengen neighbors (Serbia, North Macedonia, Turkey) — allow extra time
