Botswana Visa for Canada Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Canadian citizens can enter Botswana visa-free for stays of up to 90 days per visit for tourism or business.

Guide last updated September 29, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date
  • At least one blank visa page
  • Proof of onward or return travel (flight itinerary)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (bank statement or cash, no fixed minimum enforced but officers may ask)
  • Accommodation details (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • No biometrics collection required at entry for visa-exempt visitors
  • Travel health insurance is recommended, not mandatory, though proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission

Visa types

  • As a Canadian citizen you do not need a visa for tourism, family visits, or short business trips (meetings, conferences) of up to 90 days. If you plan to work, study, or stay longer, you must apply in advance for the relevant permit:
  • Work permit: arranged through a Botswana employer and the Department of Immigration, typically takes several weeks
  • Study permit: required for courses longer than 90 days, applied for through the institution and immigration department
  • Business/investor visa: for those setting up a company, applied for at a Botswana mission or immigration office

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days within any 12-month period as a visitor
  • Work is strictly prohibited on the visa-exempt entry; taking paid employment requires a work permit
  • On arrival, present your passport, return ticket, and be ready to state accommodation and purpose of visit; immigration stamps the passport with the permitted stay
  • Extensions of up to a further 90 days can be requested at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship offices in Gaborone before the initial period expires; a small extension fee (around BWP 300) applies
  • Overstaying can result in fines and future entry difficulties, so apply for an extension before your stamped date expires

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee, since Canadian passport holders are visa-exempt for stays up to 90 days
  • Entry is processed at the port of entry within minutes
  • Extension fee (if needed): approximately BWP 300 (about USD 22), processed same-day to a few days at the immigration office in Gaborone or Francistown
  • No service/agency fees since no pre-arrival visa application is needed

Tips for Canada travelers

  • Since no visa is required, focus your preparation on proof of onward travel and accommodation, as these are the most common reasons for secondary questioning at entry
  • Carry a printed itinerary and hotel confirmation even though it is not always requested
  • Check yellow fever vaccination requirements in advance if you are transiting through or arriving from an at-risk country in Africa or South America
  • If you intend to volunteer, do unpaid work, or take up any paid role, arrange the correct permit in advance rather than relying on the visa-exempt entry
  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for travel to northern Botswana (Okavango Delta, Chobe) — consult a travel clinic before departure
