What you need

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay in Norway and have at least two blank pages.
  • Visa Application Form: Completed and signed. Download from the UDI website or your visa application center.
  • Financial Proof: Bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds to cover your stay (recommendation is at least NOK 500 per day, approximately EUR 50).
  • Accommodation Proof: Hotel bookings, invitation letter from a host, or similar.
  • Return Ticket: Proof of a return flight or onward travel.
  • Photos: Two recent passport-sized photos (35x45mm), white background, neutral expression.
  • Biometrics: Fingerprints and a photograph will be collected at the visa application center (e.g., VFS Global).
  • Travel Health Insurance: Mandatory. Must cover medical expenses and repatriation with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. Must be valid in all Schengen countries.

Visa types

  • Short-stay Schengen Visa (Type C) for Tourism/Visit: Allows stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Single or multiple entry. Fee: EUR 80 (standard).
  • Short-stay Schengen Visa (Type C) for Business: For business meetings, conferences, etc. Allows stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Single or multiple entry. Fee: EUR 80 (standard).
  • Schengen Visa for Family/Friends Visit: Similar to tourism, but requires an invitation letter from a resident in Norway. Allows stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Fee: EUR 80 (standard).
  • Student Visa (Long-stay, Type D): For studies exceeding 90 days. Requires admission to an educational institution. Different application process and fees. Fee: NOK 6,000 (approximately EUR 540).
  • Work Visa (Long-stay, Type D): For employment in Norway. Requires a job offer and specific permits. Different application process and fees. Fee varies based on permit type.

How to apply

  • The Norwegian Embassy in Algiers no longer handles visa applications directly. Applications must be submitted through a designated external service provider, typically VFS Global.
  • Step 1: Determine the correct visa type based on your travel purpose.
  • Step 2: Complete the online application form on the UDI website (udi.no) and book an appointment at VFS Global for Algeria.
  • Step 3: Gather all required documents as per the checklist provided by UDI and VFS Global.
  • Step 4: Attend your appointment at VFS Global. Submit your application, documents, pay the fees, and provide biometrics.
  • Step 5: Track your application status online through the VFS Global portal.
  • Step 6: Collect your passport from VFS Global once a decision is made.

Fees & processing time

  • Standard Schengen Visa Fee: EUR 80. Equivalent in Algerian Dinars (DZD) will be charged at VFS Global, subject to current exchange rates.
  • VFS Global Service Fee: Approximately EUR 30-40 (subject to change).
  • Total Estimated Cost (Short-stay): EUR 110-120 (approximately 23,000-25,000 DZD).
  • Standard Processing Time: 15-45 working days, but can be longer during peak season.
  • Express/Priority Option: Not officially offered for Schengen visas through VFS Global. However, expedited processing might be possible in exceptional humanitarian cases, subject to embassy discretion.

Tips for Algeria travelers

  • Apply well in advance: At least 6 weeks before your intended travel date, and no more than 6 months prior.
  • Common rejection reasons: Insufficient financial proof, unclear travel purpose, lack of strong ties to Algeria (e.g., employment, family), incomplete documentation, and previous immigration violations.
  • VFS Global vs. Direct Embassy: For Schengen visas, VFS Global is the designated channel. Direct embassy application is generally not an option.
  • Travel Advisories: Always check the official UDI website (udi.no) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria for any current travel advisories or specific bilateral agreements.
  • Extensions: Extending a Schengen visa inside Norway is generally very difficult and only granted in exceptional, unforeseen circumstances (e.g., serious illness, force majeure).
