What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, with at least one blank page

  • Proof of hotel booking or invitation letter from an Iranian host
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Travel health insurance valid in Iran (mandatory; can be purchased at the airport if not arranged in advance)
  • No biometric enrollment required for visa on arrival; fingerprints may be taken at immigration on entry

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: single entry, valid for 30 days, extendable once for another 15-30 days at police immigration offices inside Iran, fee around USD 75-80 depending on nationality-based reciprocity fee
  • Tourist e-visa (pre-approved online): single entry, 30 days, collected as a visa-on-arrival authorization code, same fee structure, processed in 3-5 working days online
  • Business visa: requires an invitation letter from an Iranian company, arranged through an Iranian sponsor or travel agency, single or multi-entry, 30-90 days validity

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Imam Khomeini International Airport (Tehran) and a few other authorized international airports; not available at land borders
  • Apply for an e-visa authorization code in advance at e_visa.mfa.ir to reduce airport wait time (recommended 5-10 working days before travel)
  • On arrival, proceed to the visa-on-arrival counter before immigration and submit passport, photo, insurance proof, and hotel booking
  • Pay the visa fee in USD or EUR cash - Iranian banks are not linked to international card networks, so no card payments
  • Visa is stamped into the passport within 30-60 minutes at the airport counter
