What you need

  • Passport: Must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay in Iceland, issued within the last 10 years, and have at least two blank pages.
  • Visa Application Form: Completed and signed Schengen visa application form. Download from the VFS Global website for Algeria.
  • Passport-Sized Photos: Two recent photos, measuring 3.5 x 4.5 cm, with a white background, neutral facial expression, and eyes open. No head coverings unless for religious reasons.
  • Financial Proof: Bank statements for the last 3-6 months showing sufficient funds to cover your stay. A minimum of EUR 50 per day is generally recommended, or approximately EUR 450 for a short stay if accommodation is prepaid. Proof of employment/salary or sponsorship letter is also required.
  • Accommodation: Confirmed hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from an Icelandic resident if staying with them. The invitation letter must include host's details, relationship, duration of stay, and address.
  • Return Ticket: Confirmed flight reservation showing your departure from the Schengen area.
  • Travel Health Insurance: Mandatory. Must cover medical expenses and repatriation for at least EUR 30,000. It must be valid throughout the Schengen area for the entire duration of your stay.
  • Biometrics: Fingerprints and a digital photograph will be taken at the VFS Global application center. This is part of the Schengen visa application process.

Visa types

  • Schengen Visa (Uniform Visa) - Type C:
  • Official Name: Schengen Visa for Tourism, Business, Visiting Family/Friends, Short-term Study, or Medical Treatment.
  • Validity: Up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
  • Maximum Stay: 90 days.
  • Entry: Can be single or multiple entry, depending on the applicant's history and justification.
  • Approximate Fee: EUR 80 for adults, EUR 40 for children aged 6-12, free for children under 6.

How to apply

  • Step 1: Determine your visa type. For most short stays, it will be a Schengen Visa Type C.
  • Step 2: Visit the VFS Global website for Iceland in Algeria (search 'VFS Global Iceland Algeria'). Download the official Schengen visa application form and the detailed document checklist.
  • Step 3: Gather all required documents as per the checklist. Ensure your passport is valid and your financial documents are up-to-date.
  • Step 4: Book an appointment online through the VFS Global website. Appointments are often in high demand, so book well in advance.
  • Step 5: Attend your appointment at the VFS Global application center in Algiers. Submit your application form, all supporting documents, passport, and pay the visa fee and VFS service fee.
  • Step 6: Provide your biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) at the center.
  • Step 7: Track your application status online through the VFS Global website.
  • Step 8: Collect your passport and decision from the VFS Global center or have it delivered by courier (if opted for).

Fees & processing time

  • Visa Fee: EUR 80 per adult. Approximately USD 85 (exchange rates vary).
  • VFS Global Service Fee: Approximately EUR 30 (USD 32). This fee is separate from the visa fee.
  • Total Estimated Cost: EUR 110 (USD 117) per adult applicant.
  • Standard Processing Time: Approximately 15 working days from the date of your appointment at VFS Global. This can be longer during peak seasons or if additional checks are required.
  • Express/Priority Option: Not typically available for standard Schengen visa applications submitted through VFS. It is advisable to apply well in advance. Extension options might exist within Iceland under specific circumstances (see Tips).

Tips for Algeria travelers

  • Application Timing: Apply at least 45 days before your intended travel date, but no more than six months prior. Peak travel seasons (summer, holidays) may have longer processing times.
  • Common Rejection Reasons: Insufficient financial proof, lack of clear travel itinerary, unclear purpose of visit, inadequate travel insurance, or previous visa overstays. Ensure all documents are translated into English or Icelandic if required and meticulously prepared.
  • VFS Global vs. Embassy: Applying through VFS Global is the standard procedure for Algerian citizens. Direct applications to the embassy are generally not possible for Schengen visas, unless specified for very specific categories or exceptional circumstances.
