What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed Schengen visa application form (signed)
  • One biometric photo, 35x45mm, white background, taken within the last 6 months
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, valid for the whole Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from host in Germany)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Bank statements for the last 3 months showing sufficient funds (around EUR 45/day recommended)
  • Proof of employment (work certificate, leave approval) or business registration if self-employed
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) required in person at VFS Global Algeria (Algiers or Oran) or the German consulate

Visa types

  • Airport transit visa (Type A) - for travelers only passing through a German airport without entering the Schengen area
  • Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) - tourism, business, or family visits, up to 90 days in any 180-day period, single or multiple entry, fee EUR 80
  • National long-stay visa (Type D) - for work, study, or family reunification exceeding 90 days, requires additional supporting documents and longer processing

Tips for Algeria travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date; appointment slots at VFS Algiers/Oran fill up quickly
  • Common rejection reasons: insufficient bank balance, weak travel history, unclear purpose of trip, and invitation letters that are not notarized
  • All Schengen applications from Algeria go through VFS Global, not direct embassy submission
  • Keep copies of all documents; VFS does not return originals until a decision is made
