What you need

  • Passport: Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. It should also have at least one blank page for the visa stamp.
  • Application Forms: IMM 5257 (Application for Visitor Visa) and IMM 5645 (Family Information). These can be downloaded from the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
  • Financial Proof: Bank statements for the last 4-6 months showing sufficient funds to cover your expenses in Canada. There is no fixed minimum amount, but it should be realistic for your planned stay and activities. Proof of employment, pay stubs, or a letter from your employer are also highly recommended.
  • Accommodation and Return Ticket: Proof of booked accommodation for your stay and a confirmed return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase one.
  • Photos: Two recent passport-sized photos meeting specific Canadian requirements: 35mm x 45mm, neutral facial expression, plain white background, taken within the last 6 months.
  • Biometrics: Fingerprints and a photo are required for most applicants. This is typically done at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) after you submit your application and are invited to do so. The VACs in Algeria are managed by VFS Global.
  • Travel Health Insurance: While not always mandatory, it is strongly recommended to have comprehensive travel health insurance for your stay in Canada to cover any unexpected medical emergencies. Ensure it covers repatriation.

Visa types

  • Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV):
  • Official Name: Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)
  • Validity: Typically up to 6 months, but can be shorter depending on the immigration officer's decision.
  • Maximum Stay: Usually 6 months per visit, but the immigration officer at the port of entry determines the exact length of stay.
  • Entry: Can be single-entry or multiple-entry. Multiple-entry visas allow for multiple visits to Canada over a 10-year period or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Approximate Fee: CAD 100 for a single-entry visa; CAD 190 for a multiple-entry visa. For applications submitted online, the fee is typically paid in USD. For applications submitted on paper, it's in CAD. Fees are subject to change.
  • Super Visa:
  • This is a long-term multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents, allowing them to stay for up to 2 years at a time. It has different eligibility criteria and a higher financial requirement for the sponsor in Canada.
  • Study Permit:
  • For those wishing to study in Canada. Requires a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Work Permit:
  • For those intending to work in Canada. Often requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from a Canadian employer or an offer of employment from an eligible employer.

How to apply

  • For a Visitor Visa (TRV), Algerian citizens must apply on paper or online through the official IRCC portal. The most common method is applying on paper via a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Algeria, which is managed by VFS Global.
  • Steps for paper application:
  • 1. Determine eligibility and gather necessary documents: Visit the IRCC website for the most up-to-date document checklist for Algeria.
  • 2. Complete application forms: Download and fill out IMM 5257 and IMM 5645, among others.
  • 3. Pay the fees: Pay the visa application fee and the biometrics fee. Keep the receipt.
  • 4. Submit application: Submit your completed application forms, supporting documents, passport, and fee receipts at the VFS Global VAC in Algeria. You will also pay the VAC service fee at this time.
  • 5. Provide biometrics: If required, you will be given instructions on how to book an appointment at the VAC to provide your fingerprints and photograph.
  • 6. Attend an interview (if requested): You may be asked to attend an interview at the visa office.
  • 7. Track your application: You can usually track your application status online through the VFS Global website.

Fees & processing time

  • Biometrics Fee: CAD 85 per person, or CAD 170 for a family of two or more people applying at the same time.
  • VAC Service Fee: VFS Global charges a service fee for processing your application and handling your passport. This fee varies and is payable in Algerian Dinars (DZD) or USD, depending on the VAC's requirements.
  • Total Cost Estimate: The total cost will include the visa fee, biometrics fee, and VFS service fee. Expect to pay approximately 25,000 - 40,000 DZD or more, depending on current exchange rates and VFS fees.
  • Standard Processing Time: For Algerian applicants, the processing time for a visitor visa can be lengthy and varies significantly. IRCC provides estimated processing times on their website, but these are estimates and can change. Currently, processing times can range from several weeks to several months (e.g., 3-6 months or more).
  • Express/Priority Option: There is generally no guaranteed express or priority processing service for visitor visas from Algeria. It is advisable to apply well in advance of your intended travel date.

  • Extension Options Inside Canada: If you wish to extend your stay beyond the initial period granted by the immigration officer, you must apply for an extension from within Canada before your current status expires.
