What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • 2 recent passport-style photos, 35x45 mm, light background
  • Travel health insurance with at least EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the Schengen area
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statements for the last 3 months)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected in person at the VFS Global center

Visa types

  • Schengen short-stay visa (Type C): single, double, or multiple entry, valid up to 90 days within a 180-day period, fee EUR 80
  • Airport transit visa: for travelers transiting through an Austrian airport without entering the Schengen area, fee EUR 80
  • National visa (Type D): for stays longer than 90 days (study, work, family reunification), processed separately with additional documentation

  • Book an appointment through VFS Global, Austria's outsourced visa application center in Algiers

Tips for Algeria travelers

  • Book your VFS Global appointment well in advance, especially during the June-September travel season when demand is highest
  • Common rejection reasons include unclear travel purpose and insufficient proof of financial means for the length of stay
  • Make sure your travel insurance certificate explicitly states Schengen-area coverage of at least EUR 30,000
  • If Austria is not your main destination, apply at the consulate of the country where you'll spend the most time or first enter
  • Visa extensions inside Austria are only granted for exceptional circumstances (medical emergency, force majeure) and must be requested from the local immigration office before the visa expires
