What you need

  • Passport: Must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in Canada.
  • Application Forms: Complete the Generic Application Form (IMM 5257) and other necessary forms found on the official IRCC website.
  • Proof of Financial Support: Bank statements for the past four months, pay stubs, letter of employment, and/or proof of funds from a sponsor.
  • Travel Itinerary: Detailed outline of your trip, including confirmed accommodation bookings and return flight tickets.
  • Photos: Two recent passport-sized photos (35mm x 45mm) with a white background, neutral expression, and taken within the last 6 months.
  • Biometrics: Fingerprints and a photograph are required for most applicants. This is done at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) after submitting your application.
  • Travel Medical Insurance: While not always mandatory for entry, it is highly recommended for all visitors to Canada. It should cover medical emergencies and repatriation.

Visa types

  • Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)
  • Official Name: Visitor Visa
  • Validity: Typically up to 6 months per entry, but the immigration officer at the port of entry determines the exact duration.
  • Maximum Stay: Usually 6 months. Extensions can be applied for within Canada.
  • Entry Type: Can be single-entry or multiple-entry. Multiple-entry visas are usually valid for up to 10 years or until the passport expires.

How to apply

  • Visit the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html
  • Create an account or log in to apply online.
  • Fill out the application forms accurately and upload supporting documents.
  • Pay the application fee online.
  • Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Albania (usually managed by VFS Global or BLS International) to submit your passport and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
  • Wait for a decision on your application. You will be notified when your passport is ready for collection or will be returned by mail.

Fees & processing time

  • Visitor Visa Fee: CAD 100 per person (approximately USD 73 as of late 2023, but check current exchange rates).
  • Biometrics Fee: CAD 85 per person (or CAD 170 for a family applying together).
  • VFS/BLS Service Fee: Varies by location and services used, typically around CAD 30-50.
  • Total Cost Estimate: Around CAD 185-235 per person, excluding any optional services.
  • Standard Processing Time: Approximately 13 business days for the visa application itself, but this can vary significantly based on application volume and complexity. Biometrics submission and passport return add to the overall timeline.
  • Express/Priority Option: Canada does not typically offer an express processing option for visitor visas.

Tips for Albania travelers

  • Apply Well in Advance: It is recommended to apply at least 2-3 months before your intended travel date to allow ample time for processing.
  • Common Rejection Reasons for Albania Applicants: Insufficient proof of funds, weak ties to Albania (risk of overstaying), unclear travel purpose, incomplete documentation, and past immigration violations.
  • VFS/BLS vs. Direct Embassy Application: All visitor visa applications from Albania are processed through designated Visa Application Centres (VACs) like VFS Global or BLS International. Direct submission to the embassy is not an option for this visa type.
  • Travel Advisories: Always check the official IRCC website for any specific travel advisories or program updates related to Albania.
  • Extension Options Inside Canada: If you wish to stay longer than the period granted by the immigration officer at the port of entry, you can apply for an extension online from within Canada before your current status expires.
