What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Vietnam and have at least 1 blank page for border stamping if required.
  • Specific forms: No external form like DS-160/VAF1A is used for the Vietnam e-Visa; complete the online application at the official portal at https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/.
  • Financial proof: Not required for the Vietnam e-Visa application.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Not mandatory to show during the online application; border officers may request hotel details or onward travel information upon arrival.
  • Photo spec: Upload a recent color passport-style photo with a white background; preferred format is JPEG or PNG; ensure image is clear and properly lit.
  • Biometrics: Not required to submit biometrics as part of the online e-Visa process; identity is verified by the passport and e-Visa approval at border.
  • Travel health insurance: Not required, but highly recommended to have coverage during your stay in Vietnam.
  • Data consistency: Ensure that the applicant’s name, date of birth, gender, nationality, passport number, and passport expiry date exactly match the information in your passport.

Visa types

  • Tourist e-visa (e-Visa – Tourism): Valid for 30 days from the date of entry, single entry, maximum stay 30 days; official fee USD 25.
  • Business e-visa (e-Visa – Business): Valid for 30 days from the date of entry, single entry, maximum stay 30 days; official fee USD 25.
  • Other categories: Vietnam currently offers the e-Visa primarily for tourism and business purposes; there is no separate long-stay or multiple-entry e-Visa option listed for Afghan applicants.

Application process

  • How to apply online: Go to https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/ and sign in or create an account.
  • Steps: (1) Choose visa type (Tourist or Business). (2) Fill in applicant details exactly as in your passport. (3) Upload required documents: passport data page scan and a recent color photo. (4) Pay the visa fee with a credit or debit card (USD 25). (5) Submit the application and wait for processing.
  • Processing time: up to 3 working days for standard processing.
  • Approval delivery: If approved, the e-Visa approval notification will be available in your portal account; print the approval letter or save as PDF and carry it with your passport to Vietnam.
  • On arrival: Present your passport and the printed/electronic e-Visa approval to Vietnamese border officers; authorities will verify and grant entry.
  • Rejection: If not approved, review the stated reasons in the portal, correct any data errors, and reapply.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 25; local currency equivalent (approx. VND 575,000 to 700,000 depending on exchange rate at time of payment).
  • No additional consular or handling fees from Vietnam for e-Visa; there is no separate VFS/BLS service fee for e-Visa.
  • Total cost estimate: USD 25 (plus any local bank/credit card charges if applicable).
  • Standard processing time: Up to 3 working days.
  • Express/priority option: Not available for the Vietnam e-Visa; processing times and fees are fixed through the official portal.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: Apply at least 3–5 working days before planned travel; for safety, aim for 1–2 weeks prior to departure.
  • Common rejection reasons for Afghan applicants: Passport validity less than 6 months, name or date of birth mismatches between passport and application, passport data page upload is unclear or unreadable, incorrect or missing passport number, data entry errors, uploading a photo or document in an unacceptable format, or applying for a visa type not available to your nationality.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: The Vietnam e-Visa is issued online via the official portal; there is no VFS/BLS submission for e-Visas. If you need a different visa route (e.g., long stay or diplomatic/official purposes), consult the official Vietnam government portal or the nearest Vietnamese embassy/consulate via https://vietnam.gov.vn/ for guidance.
  • Travel advisories and bilateral notes: Check your government travel advisories for Afghanistan and keep an eye on Vietnam’s entry policies and visa updates on the official e-Visa portal. Rules can change, and entry requirements may be updated.
  • Extension options inside Vietnam: The e-Visa is limited to 30 days and is generally not extendable. For longer stays, you would typically need to exit Vietnam and re-apply for a new e-Visa or apply for a traditional visa at a Vietnamese embassy/consulate before travel.
